Stand By Me covered by Imagine Dragons
At the 2015 Billboard Music Awards, Imagine Dragons paid tribute to the late Ben E. King with a tearful yet powerful rendition of his influential “Stand By Me.”
King’s original is wistful, soulful, and mournful; Imagine Dragons do an exceptionally strong job at paying their respect. Dan Reynolds’ voice leans more on the powerful side, but he’s still able to capture the melancholic longing that is emblematic of the song. Imagine Dragons adds a little modern bravado to the ballad, even moving taylorswift to sing along in the audience. The vocals, the atmosphere, and the mellifluous guitar solo call our soulful King to memory.
And although Dan promises to “not shed a tear,” some audience members in fact do.
